Five things you never knew about the making of Toy Story

How much do you think you know about Toy Story? What about these five fabulous facts…

  1. Barbie doesn’t appear in the original movie. This is because Barbie’s owners, Mattel, didn’t want to give Barbie a specific voice as they felt it went against the way girls play with Barbie, giving her their own voice. Funnily enough, once the movie was a great success, Barbie was happy to appear in the sequel four years later.
  2. Similarly GI Joe wasn’t allowed to appear in the movie. Although owners Hasbro did license the use of their perennial favourite, Mr Potato Head.
  3. The film was nearly not made as the original script was rejected. Why? Because our favourite loveable cowboy Woody originally came across as a “sarcastic jerk”. Luckily they rewrote his character and affable Woody emerged.
  4. While Buzz might not have made it to Infinity and Beyond, he has made it into space! In 2008 he was taken on board the Discovery Space Shuttle as part of an educational programme. He took part in zero-gravity experiments and made it home safely after.
  5. The role of Woody was written with Tom Hanks in mind to do the voice. Billy Crystal was approached to play Buzz Lightyear but he turned it down and the role went to Tim Allen instead. Luckily for all of us, Billy went on to voice one of my favourite of all Pixar characters, Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc.
